Brotherhood Of The Lake - Desperation Is The English Way VOL. 1 (2012)

Desperation Is The English Way Vol 1 is the debut full length by the UK hardcore band Brotherhood of the Lake. Just by taking a glimpse at the album cover and the name of the record, you can tell what the theme of the record is and with song titles such as "its meant to hurt, " and "you'll never dream, " you can tell your if for an emotional rollercoaster. DITEW is an album all about topics such as anger, depression and hopelessness, that you can really relate to and you can feel the pure emotion fly through you within the music.

Whats not to be expected like a lot of bands in the genre, is these guys are anything but 1 dimensional and theres a little more range in there music. They escape the stereotype of just playing breakdown after breakdown and shouting. Theres some great riffs and surprisingly some intriguing intros into the music just before the onslaught of crushing guitars and heavy bass. The intro into "Black Knifes," is just 1 example of the band pushing boundaries instead of just playing pure filth hardcore. The tone of bass really adds to the album as it has this real sludge feel which complements the concept of the album. Theres some great lyrics and some great moments in the record when you just want to shout the words out with the band. I can guarantee Brotherhood Of The Lake are one of those bands where to fully appreciate there music you have to go and see them live.

Whilst what Brotherhood Of lake do is great, and is true to what they believe in. It will still be regarded as a straight up shouty hardcore record that won't attract any punters from outside the scene. If your a fan of bands such as the legendary Converge, or just have an interest in the UK hardcore scene then check this album out and go see them on tour, if not its probably not for you or like said you'll just regard it as a band which are playing music which has been done to death.
